About Me Growing up in East London, I was immersed in the rich sounds of classic Soul, Reggae, and Calypso. My love for Jazz began when I first heard Billie Holiday’s stunning rendition of God Bless The Child on a 45' record—it was a life-changing moment that shaped my musical journey.
I began my professional music career as the lead vocalist for the London-based band Fish Out of Water.
Our performances took us to various venues, music festivals across the UK and Europe, as well as TV and radio appearances. In 1988, we released our album Red Sunset on Stream Records.
After taking a break to raise a family and explore new creative pursuits—including studying Art Textiles at Goldsmiths College in London—I returned to my first love: music. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible jazz musicians in London, performing at renowned clubs such as The Bull's Head and The Vortex. For me, interpreting the jazz songbook remains an endlessly fascinating experience.
In addition to my work as a performer, I am a qualified music leader, vocalist, and singing teacher with extensive experience working with people of all ages. I am deeply passionate about helping others discover the joy of singing in a group and the transformative benefits of connecting with their voice. Drawing on the well-documented healing power of music, recognized by medical professionals, I champion its ability to enhance emotional well-being, boost mental health, and foster a sense of community.
Currently, I lead the Tuneless Choir in London Vauxhall, an inclusive group designed for individuals who believe they "can't sing." Whether in tune or out, I help members build confidence and find happiness through music. I also run singing sessions for young people at Woolwich Creative Club and collaborate with an elders' community group at Chats Palace Arts Centre in Hackney. Additionally, I’ve been invited to incorporate singing sessions into mindfulness talk presentations for MNPC (People of Colour Supportive Network Supporting Equality), engaging audiences and uplifting the atmosphere through the healing power of music.
I am also a qualified Reiki and Sound Healer, and I plan to provide sessions that blend the healing aspects of Reiki and sound therapy with vocal coaching. These sessions aim to help individuals connect with their voices in a deeply restorative and empowering way. Through this unique approach, I hope to unlock the transformative power of sound and energy for those seeking a holistic musical experience.
I also perform popular jazz standards alongside guitarist Max Warner. Together, we bring a relaxed and jazzy atmosphere to parties and events, sharing our love of music in intimate settings.
I hope you enjoy exploring my website. Feel free to get in touch if you’d like me to sing for your event or explore the healing magic of sound—I’d love to make your day truly special.
Warm wishes, Talibah
